I'm not at the machine today. Will have to look at it tomorrow. I haven't noticed any problem with my latest CNC projects doing 3d though.
It's been a few years since I built it. I will have to look at my notes to find the pitch.

Thanks for your help in this.

Spindle carving may not show slight deviations in the mechanics, but raster laser engraving photos surely will.

It's not necessarily the Rack & Pinion pitch causing it, but could be periodic wear to the teeth, or how precise the teeth mesh with each other.

We tried attaching a laser diode to a Plasmacam machine which has a Rack & Pinion drive also and the quality of the laser photo engravings were not very desirable.

Well I finally had time to get back to this. Not encouraging to see what you had to say about rack and pinion machines.
Anyway I tried 45d. Results are worse. Not only do I have the vertical lines but now also 45d lines. I also made sure I put in on a portion of my bed that has not had a lot of work done to avoid wear points.
Here is a picture of the new burn. Nothing else changed except the direction.

Here is the laser we built mounted on a PlasmaCam and the results we achieved with it. We just could not get sharp quality results.

Looks similar to mine. Well guess I'll have to figure out what options I have.
Thanks for your help in all this.
